🍽

My eyes opened to the sunlight spilling in from an uncomfortable sleep on the loveseat. I sat up slowly to stretch out my kinks. I’d forgotten how uncomfortable crashing on that couch was. I rubbed my eyes and remembered the events from the night before. How unfortunate for Zoe. Not only is she now in a terrible situation, she’d also been physically assaulted. It would be up to her how she’d want to handle it, but I’d be by her side every step of the way.

I picked up my cell phone to see if I’d heard anything from Robby and not to my surprise (but definitely to my disappointment), I hadn’t. It was eleven in the morning and I’d have more than enough time to make our breakfast and get ready for work. I looked over toward Zoe and she was still fast asleep. I bet she needed as much as she could get. I left the loveseat, picked up the defrosted bag of peas on the floor, and tiptoed my way into the kitchen.

Before we started our movie last night I had pulled out a loaf of bread and left it on the counter. The best french toast is made with hardened, crusty bread. I made the milk bath with spices and eggs and left the slices of bread to soak while I went about my routine. Medicine, shower, matcha latte, and finally cooking the toast. Through all of that noise, Zoe was still fast asleep on the couch. So, I ate my portion of breakfast in silence and left hers covered on the stove. My shift would be starting soon but I was absolutely dreading it with the news that Zoe had shared. What would Larry say to me? Everyone there knows how close Zoe and I are, so the idea of seeing him today felt like a pile of dark matter growing in the pit of my stomach.

No choice but to face it. It’s not like I could leave this job. I had no backup, no financial support, and no family to rely on. Living life just inches away from total failure is no life at all.

Again the bus came on time, again I rode in silence reading LA Times food reviews, and again I walked into a loud kitchen with a mountain of sauce and food bit stained dishes waiting for me with my name on them. The last person I wanted to lay eyes on was Larry but I had to mentally prepare myself for that possibility. What would I say? I’d just deny it. I can’t get in the middle of whatever this is.

“Emma Lovie!”

I heard my name being shouted from inside the dining room.

This was it.

I knew he’d drag me into this mess.

I braced myself on the dishwasher and waited for whomever it was shouting my full name to come and find me their damn selves. I wouldn’t willingly walk into the flames.

“Emma Lovie, did you hear me calling you?”

I turned to see it was the hostess, who was usually a complete and total bitch to me.
